I’ve never really understood why it is that people who study art and film get called pretentious for talking critically about art and film. if people who work or study in these industries share an educated opinion about something I don’t see why that makes some pretentious, it’s just like a somebody with a medical a business degree gave their opinion on something related to those fields. it’s not pretentious to be academic about something that you’ve paid money to study or about something you made money doing.

it’s also not an absurd assumption to believe that you probably know more about a subject that you have a degree in/work in than somebody who does not although that is not always the case obviously. i’m not talking about times where people diminish others based on not having a degree but what I mean to say is that just because somebody who studies/works in art shares their opinion that doesn’t necessarily make it pretentious. it’s a really one-sided and childish way of diminishing conversation. no opinion is more valid than another but some are definitely more educated from experience and from school? i dunno like i dont really see the logic

Right.
